Final Product

Description
Length of shield going from forehead to below chin is 8.5” (21.59cm)
Shield going around the head is 11” (27.94cm)
This particular model was hacked by Dr. Oliver Tu of Atlanta.
Dr. Karen Tsai of Los Angeles stated:
Make sure the seal is good at the forehead, so the particles do not drop in.
Make the shield, so it covers the entire face.
Look up some professional shields to see examples.
Dr. Tsai ideally would like the face shield to be 24cm from forehead to pass the chin.
(However, I'm adding a 24cm length shield would drive up cost, harder to find, and will increase the turnaround time.) Cost and Where to Buy Materials Total cost for materials varies. Shop around to find the best deals. Check your local hobby store: Michael’s, Joann Fabric, Hobby Lobby, Walmart, Amazon, etc. Use those craft coupons. As I’m writing this, cheaper elastic bands on Amazon are already back ordered. Materials Needed 1) 1" thick poly foam (2.54cm thick) Amazon (1" x 24" x 120") currently $34.99 (with this much foam, you can make 240 bars) (2.54 cm x 60.96cm x 304.8cm) 2) 3/4 inch elastic bands (1.9cm) Amazon currently $38.79, if you can find cheaper, even better (with 1 packet of elastic, you can make 225 bands) 3) 8.5" x 11" PVC binder cover (21.59cm x 27.94cm) Amazon currently $29.99 for 200 sheets 4) 3M adhesive spray(3M Hi-Strength 90 Spray Adhesive, Clear) Amazon currently $16.59 3M 45 adhesive worked fine for Dr. Tu (90 is better, but 45 general purpose spray works and cheaper) 5) Bread knife or serrated knife or pumpkin carving knife How to Cut Foam 6) Cutting Mat (optional) Amazon currently $7.98 7) Stapler
8) Staples Directions -Cut the foam into 8" x 1 " x 1 " (20.32cm x 2.54cm x 2.54cm) bar the length of the foam around the head should be around 8”-9” (20.32cm - 22.86cm) -Use PVC binder cover as is, no need to cut -Adhere the foam bar unto the 11"(27.94cm) edge of the binder cover in the middle(center the foam on the 11”(27.94cm edge) after spraying one side of the bar with 3M adhesive spray -Cut 12” (30.48cm) elastic bands
-Staple 12” (30.48cm) elastic bands at the ends
(to meet the cut foam bar, see photo)
Additional Information
Dr. Oliver Tu was inspired by this video, figured out what materials to use and put his two daughters to work. They have made 40 so far and donated the face shields to their local hospital. Dr. Tu’s two daughters are in the process of making 1000 more per hospital request. His first batch cost about 50 cents each. Dr. Tu shopped around to reduce the cost to about 30-35 cents each.
Dr. Tu stated the face shields are reusable, cleanable and disposable.
Equivalent commercial face shields cost several times that on Amazon and are not readily available.
This face shield is quicker and more likely cheaper to make than the 3D printed head bands.
